Catechism for Jewish Children

Philadelphia: L. Johnson & Co., 1839.

Good. Fourth Edition. Small 12mo. Bound in original 19th-century quarter-binding over institutional paper-covered boards. Covers show general surface wear, edge-wear, and worn corners. Spine structurally secure with light scuffing. Internal text block remains solid with toning, sporadic foxing. Markings and writings from previous owner along the flyleafs. Partial loss on bottom corner of back flyleaf.

A scarce copy of the Fourth Edition of Isaac Leeser’s pioneering instructional work, printed from the original 1839 L. Johnson stereotype plates. Leeser, a towering leader of traditional American Judaism and chazzan of Philadelphia's Mikveh Israel, produced this volume to counter the complete lack of English-language educational materials for Jewish youth in the United States. The text covers the foundational tenets of the Mosaic religion, the Ten Commandments, and the structural moral codes of scriptural law. A vital foundational monument of early American Judaica print history.
