They are fragile.
This is the landmark U.S. Army engineering report by Humphreys and Abbot that established modern river hydraulics for the Mississippi River delta and alluvial region. Its importance lies both in scientific/engineering history and in the practical control of the Mississippi River's flooding and navigation.
