This book was conceived by Lyle Kenyon Engel, a literary producer who collaborated with major authors to create large-format, photo-essay books.
Buck’s The People of Japan came late in her career — she had already won the Nobel Prize for Literature (1938) — and reflected her lifelong mission to foster cross-cultural understanding between East and West.
