John Clellon Holmes [Playboy Award 1972]

1972. Lucite presentation award for "Annual Playboy Editorial Award Winner" presented to writer John Clellon Holmes in 1972 as stated on the top side of the medallion which is encased in Lucite. The underside of the award medallion states, "John Clellon Holmes, 1972". The award is in excellent condition; the Lucite has no yellowing and no damage.

John Clellon Holmes was an early documenter of Beat writers and published the first article on the movement in the New York Times in 1952. He wrote several novels which are included in the Beat Generation oeuvre. Holmes wrote essays and articles for Playboy in the 60s and 70s focusing on American identity, jazz culture, and the evolving counterculture.

This award came from the collection of Jeffrey Smalldon, a writer who specializes in the history of the Beat Generation. He is also an author of true crime fiction. Smalldon maintained a correspondence with Holmes's daughter, from whom he obtained this award.

A unique piece of ephemera for collectors of Beat Generation memorabilia as well as collectors of Playboy Magazine historical items.
