This volume, issued under the patronage of the Trustees of the John F. Slater Fund, records the proceedings of the 18th Atlanta University Conference, held on May 26, 1913.
Directed and largely authored by W.E.B. Du Bois, the series of annual Atlanta University Studies (1896–1914) represents the first sustained, data-driven investigation into the social, economic, and educational conditions of African Americans in the post-Reconstruction South.
Conceived by Atlanta University president Horace Bumstead and carried forward by Du Bois, these conferences brought together scholars, educators, and reformers to address pressing issues of Black life with empirical rigor, years before the professional discipline of sociology was fully established in the United States.
Though Du Bois’s name often appears only as editor, his hand shaped nearly every aspect of these publications. Today, surviving copies are scarce; most were later rebound, making intact examples like this especially desirable. This 1913 report stands as both a landmark in African American scholarship and a tangible artifact of Du Bois’s groundbreaking sociological project at Atlanta University.
