The Life and Death of King Richard the Second

London: 1632. Second Folio. Fol. (8 3/4 × 12 1/2 in; 22 × 31 cm) 12 original leaves from the Second Folio. Pages 23-46. The text is uncharacteristically clean for being almost 400 years old, with only a few small darkened spots less than a quarter inch on a few pages and a closed two inch tear on the bottom of one of the pages. No notes or marks on the text. The book is in a later binding. Very good copy.

Printed in 1632 by London printer Thomas Cotes,
Shakespeare’s Second Folio is one of the most important books in English literature. Only about 1,000 copies were originally produced, and fewer than 200 are known to survive today, making any example a true rarity. Most are in institutions.

Individual plays extracted from the Second Folio in this condition represent a scarce opportunity to acquire a tangible piece of seventeenth-century Shakespearean history. These are becoming much harder to find and will likely become unattainable in the coming years, given the scarcity.
